K-Beauty
(everything you need to know about Korean beauty in Korea)

K-Beauty is one of the biggest parts of Korean culture that’s made its way around the world, and experiencing it in South Korea is a completely different experience from just buying Korean skincare at home.
Even though skincare is probably the most recognized part of “K-Beauty”, it goes far beyond that and also includes makeup, haircare, nails, personal color analysis, treatments, wellness, and all kinds of beauty experiences.
You’ll find beauty stores on every major shopping street, and although you can find very cheap stores and clinics – I caution against shopping at these stores or getting any treatments done. If it seems too cheap, it likely is.
Olive Young is my go-to, and is a trustworthy option. For clinics, I recommend staying in the Gangnam/Sinsa areas.
Best K-Beauty Experiences in South Korea
An Olive Young trip is essential. I recommend planning to visit twice only because they can be a bit overwhelming, especially because they can also be super busy. Research which products you want beforehand to make it easier, and give yourself lots of time to browse too.
A Personal Color Analysis is also another must if you haven’t had yours done yet. You’ll get everything from your skin tone to your hair and eye color analyzed and they’ll help determine which colors (including makeup shades) are most flattering for you..
Facials or Skincare Treatments are extremely popular in Seoul. You can book everything from relaxing facials to more advanced cosmetic surgeries. I only recommend choosing a reputable clinic and confirming whether the staff can communicate comfortably with you.
Korean Hair Salons are my favorite, and I get my hair done everytime I’m in Seoul. Not only are they a lot cheaper than the states, but they usually go above and beyond with hair care.
Korean Nail Art is known for detailed designs, textures, and adorable use of color and decorations. Like other beauty treatments in Seoul, they’re usually a lot cheaper than the states as well. I recommend bringing a picture of what you want!

Best Areas for K-Beauty in Seoul
Myeongdong
Myeongdong is probably the most convenient neighborhood for first-time visitors who want to shop for cheap Korean beauty products.
You’ll find a huge concentration of beauty stores, including Olive Young and individual Korean brands, right along the walking street. However, they likely won’t be of any good quality products.
Gangnam
Gangnam is another major beauty destination, particularly if you’re interested in cosmetic treatments, clinics, and more specialized beauty experiences.
There’s also lots of high-end shopping and beauty brands, and is known for being the plastic-surgery epicenter. You’ll often notice many people walking around with eye, nose, or chin bandages after getting procedures done.
Hongdae
Hongdae is a great option if you’re interested in newer and younger beauty trends, makeup, and fashion. Like Myeongdong, you can often find cheaper options here.
Seongsu
Seongsu has become one of Seoul’s most popular and trendiest areas and is the most well known area for beauty pop-ups, brand experiences, concept stores, and limited-time events.
If you’re visiting Seoul and see a beauty brand hosting a pop-up in Seongsu, it’s worth checking out. You can often find better quality products here, and typically will find brands that are on the rise or already well established.
K-Beauty for Beginners
If you’re completely new to K-beauty, you don’t need to spend hours researching products before your trip.
I’d start simple and visit Olive Young to browse the different aisles. Bring a translator app and ask the workers about specific trouble spots you have or results you want to see and they’ll help guide you to the right product.
My go-to items that I always stock up on are face masks and Korean sunscreen.
If you want an experience rather than just shopping, book a personal color analysis, facial, nail appointment, or hair salon visit – Korea is definitely the place to pamper yourself!
